Council raises "Maquinita" fees

The Laredo city council has increased the fee for the "maquinita" machines from $150 to $250. Councilwoman Cindy L. Espinoza was the only member to vote against the increase saying that many amusement centers don't do illegal things and don't deserve this fee increase. Councilman Juan Narvaez obstained from the vote because he rents out "maquinutas". City Manager Carlos Villarreal said he doesn't think people flock to the amusement centers to win just $5.

  1. I really don't understand why it is illeagal to pay out more than $5 on these things.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't go to these establishments, but I really don't see why it has to be against the law.

Our "leaders" say that elderly people go and spend all their retirement checks on those machines trying to hit the jackpot...but, don't they do the same thing at the bingo? And that's perfectly legal. Isn't it the same difference?
